NEW BOOK ON STEM CELLS OF AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES

Why publish a book on invertebrate stem cells—and particularly one with a focus on aquatic invertebrates? The answer lies in a rapidly evolving stem cell discipline, driven by ever-advancing molecular tools and imaging techniques, today being one of the most dynamic areas in biology and biomedicine. This inevitably influences the research on invertebrates, with a noteworthy reference to aquatic organisms. Indeed, aquatic invertebrates represent the greatest majority of animal biodiversity. They exhibit various biological features that are of vast interest to stem cell researchers and biologists in general. These include the high regenerative power displayed by a broad range of taxa, the lack of early germ cell sequestering, and a widespread presence of asexual reproduction, dormancy, postponed aging and rejuvenation. All of these phenomena are associated with the action of pools of adult stem cells (ASCs) throughout the animal life cycles.
Current research on aquatic invertebrate ASCs takes advantage from new experimental approaches and an increasing number of sequenced animal genomes and transcriptomes available in databases. The accumulated results reveal that aquatic invertebrate ASCs have unique features not recorded in the vertebrates and model terrestrial invertebrates, such as their high abundance (up to 40% of the entire body cells in some taxa) and their often indeterminate capacity for growth. In addition, aquatic invertebrate ASCs are directly involved in the control and modulation of innate immune responses and challenge the concept of the stem cell niche as defined in vertebrates and ecdysozoans.
The book Advances in Aquatic Invertebrate Stem Cell Research. From Basic Research to Innovative Applications, Edited by Loriano Ballarin, Baruch Rinkevich, Bert Hobmayer (MDPI, Basel. ISBN 978-3-0365-1636-3, doi.org/10.3390/books978-3-0365-1636-3,
https://www.mdpi.com/books/pdfview/edition/5071) stems from the activities within the COST Action 16203 MARISTEM Stem cells of marine/aquatic invertebrates: from basic research to innovative applications (http://maristem.eu), leaded by Loriano Ballarin, which will end on 1 April 2022. It represents one of the final deliverables of four years of interaction and collects the contributions of a relevant part of its members. It holds 11 chapters dealing with sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, echinoderms and tunicates, highlighting the best-studied adult stem cell lineages among aquatic invertebrates.
Two chapters of the book were coordinated by members of the Department of Biology (University of Padova, Italy):
• Chapter 3 - Somatic expression of stemness genes in aquatic invertebrates, coordinated by L. Ballarin (Ballarin et al.). It reviews the expression of typical stemness genes is aquatic invertebrate ASCs, previously considered an attribute of germ cells, including piwi, vasa, nanos, and more. It represents a database useful for current and future studies on ASC properties deriving from a comprehensive literature analysis of intra- and inter-phylum comparisons of gene expressions and their functions in aquatic invertebrate ASCs.
• Chapter 9 - Current knowledge on stem cells in ascidians, coordinated by Lucia Manni, together with Virginia Vanni, Loriano Ballarin, Laura Drago, Fabio Gasparini, and Anna Peronato. The chapter emphasizes what is currently known on the biology and the level of involvement of ASCs in ascidian development and regeneration in both solitary and colonial species. In addition, it focuses on the methods used to identify stem cells and stem cell niches and discusses hypotheses regarding their role in biological phenomena of ascidians such as budding, torpor, regeneration, aging, and chimerism.

ISJ-Invertebrate Survival Journal & IADCI Special Issue Proposal
ISJ-Invertebrate Survival Journal (a peer-reviewed and free open access journal without APC, ISSN 1824-307X), in collaboration with the Italian Association of Developmental and Comparative Immunobiology (IADCI), calls for contribution to a Special Issue entitled:
EVOLUTIONARY AND FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF STRESS RESPONSES
Guest Editors:
Loriano Ballarin (University of Padua, Padua, Italy)
Daniela Melillo (National Research Council (CNR), Naples, Italy)
Maria GIovanna Parisi (University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy)
Stress is a nonspecific response of the organisms to every change/stimulus unbalancing the homeostatic condition. Organisms respond to stress by using adaptation in order to evade or recover from stress. Their overall response encompasses behavioral, physiological, immune, biochemical and molecular reactions.
This Special Issue welcomes original contributions focused on the evolution and the functions of molecules and mechanisms underlying tolerance/resistance/survival of organisms to abiotic or biotic stressors.
Reviews and short reviews, are especially welcome in this Special Issue.

A
PhD student position is offered in the group of aquatic ecology at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) / Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Research), in Switzerland, to assess evolutionary potential of innate immune traits of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Host immune capabilities that counter harmful parasites are considered important determinants for fitness. However, knowledge on the evolutionary potential of immune traits in the wild is limited. This project will examine the extent of genetic variation as well as genetic architecture of snail immunity in natural populations under stress of parasite infections. The project will combine field work, classical quantitative genetic breeding designs, and modern genomics and transcriptomics technologies. The goals of the project are (1) to quantify additive genetic variance and covariance of immune defense traits under field conditions, (2) to determine their genetic architecture by testing whether the traits are polygenic or not and which candidate loci contribute to trait variation, and (3) to test the relative importance of various genetic and non-genetic factors in determining the expression of immune genes by calculating variance components for them. Extensive transcriptomic datasets, previously obtained from L. stagnalis, are available to initiate this project. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Philine Feulner (Eawag), Prof. Coen Adema (University of New Mexico) and the Genetic Diversity Centre at ETH (http://www.gdc.ethz.ch/).
General information about the research group can be found at http://www.ae.ethz.ch/ We invite highly motivated students with a good background in evolutionary ecology and molecular methods to apply for the position. A MSc or equivalent degree is required. Earlier experience with the study system is not required. The project is funded by ETH Zurich for 3 years. The project will be integrated with ongoing investigations of natural selection on immune function. Earliest starting date: September 1, 2017 Qualified persons are invited to apply by email. Please attach a single PDF file including a letter of motivation, CV, and names plus contact information of two references to
otto.seppaelae@env.ethz.ch. Subject line should read "PHD-Position 2017".
Evaluation of applications starts July 21, 2017.
Top candidates will be interviewed.
