3b. Mt. Tam West: contrast gain

Contrast gain images. The measure calculates the gain or loss of local contrast due to the dynamic range compression [8]. The image is partitioned into smooth areas, strong edges and details; the details are taken in greater account in the measure since they carry the most relevant information content and are typically attenuated by the tone mapping.
The measure has been performed for eight different tone mapping algorithms: the Ward histogram adjustment [1], the logarithmic mapping proposed by Drago et al. [2], the Reinhard et al. photographic tone reproduction method [3], the Reinhard and Devlin algorithm based on a photoreceptor model [4], the Durand and Dorsey method based on the bilateral filter [5], the Ashikhmin spatially-variant operator [6], the gradient domain operator proposed by Fattal et al. [7] and our method.
