Description of Events

In the light of Joyce's own recollection of his Triestine sojourn, it is entirely fitting that Trieste is home, for the fifth consecutive year, to the Trieste Joyce School, which aims to satisfy the needs both of seasoned Joyceans and of newcomers to the world of Joyce studies. The school takes place in the city Joyce termed "my second country" and draws inspiration from Trieste itself - its history, its culture, its architecture, its institutions.

The Trieste Joyce School has developed a considerable reputation among Joyceans and has attracted students from over twenty different countries and distinguished speakers such as Kevin Barry, Morris Beja, John Bishop, Piero Boitani, Zack Bowen, Rosa Maria Bosinelli, Father Bruce Bradley S.J., Peter Hartshorn, Ellen Carol Jones, Richard Kearney, Brandon Kershner, Terence Killeen, Sebastian Knowles, Geert Lernout, Corinna del Greco Lobner, Agostino Lombardo, Joaquim Mallafr, Tim Martin, Giorgio Melchiori, Ken Monaghan, David Norris, David Pierce, Franz Stanzel, Weldon Thornton, as well as acclaimed writers such as Edna O'Brien, Bernard MacLaverty, Paula Meehan, Colm Tibin, Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, and Claudio Magris.

The school opens on the evening of Sunday 1 July in the auditorium of the Galleria d'Arte moderna "Revoltella" and concludes with a farewell dinner the following Saturday. A wide range of critical approaches is encouraged and each morning there are two or three lectures followed by afternoon week-long seminars on Dubliners (Austin Briggs), Ulysses (Fritz Senn), and Finnegans Wake (Ron Ewart). An additional shorter seminar will be held on Joyce in translation (Rosa Maria Bosinelli). Walking tours to see key spots in Joyce's Trieste such as the Greek Orthodox Church, the Jewish Synagogue, the Teatro Verdi, the Archivio Svevo, and the Caff San Marco are also arranged.

Among the planned highlights of the evening social programme are a visit to an Osmiza in the Triestine Carso, a visit to Miramare Castle - once summer home of the Hapsburgs, an evening of music and song, an afternoon on the beach, and a special reading by the acclaimed Northern Irish poet, Michael Longley.
