DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS

In the light of Joyce's own recollection of his Triestine sojourn, it is entirely fitting that Trieste is home, for the fourth consecutive year, to the Trieste Joyce School, which aims to satisfy the needs both of seasoned Joyceans and newcomers to the world of Joyce studies.  
As the school takes place in the city Joyce termed "my second country" we attempt to draw on Trieste itself - its history, its culture, its architecture, its institutions -   as an inspiration for our studies.
Over the past three years, the Trieste Joyce School has developed a considerable reputation among Joyceans in Europe and the United States and has attracted students from over twenty different countries and distinguished speakers such as Kevin Barry, Piero Boitani, Zack Bowen, Rosa Maria Bosinelli, Father Bruce Bradley S.J., Peter Hartshorn, Brandon Kershner, Terence Killeen, Sebastian Knowles, Geert Lernout, Corinna del Greco Lobner, Tim Martin, Giorgio Melchiori, Ken Monaghan, David Norris, Franz Stanzel, Weldon Thornton, as well as acclaimed writers including Edna O'Brien, Bernard MacLaverty, Paula Meehan, Colm T�ibin, and Claudio Magris. 

The school opens on the evening of Sunday 2 July and concludes with a farewell dinner on Saturday 8 July. 

A wide range of critical approaches is encouraged and each morning there will be two or three lectures followed by afternoon week-long seminars on Dubliners (David Pierce), Ulysses (Fritz Senn),  Finnegans Wake (John Bishop),  and Joyce's Triestine Writings (John McCourt). Walking tours of Joyce's Trieste and visits to places of Joyceans interest, such as the Greek Orthodox Church, the Jewish Synagogue, the Teatro Verdi, the Archivio Svevo, and the Caff� San Marco will also be arranged. Among the planned highlights of the evening social programme (the cost of which is included in the tuition fee) are a visit to an Osmiza in the Triestine Carso, a night at the operetta at the Teatro Verdi, a visit to the Castello Miramare - once summer home of the Hapsburgs-, an evening of music and song, an afternoon on the beach, and a special reading by the acclaimed Irish poet, Eilean Ni Chuilleanean.
