The objective of this workshop is to familiarize the participants with the basics of learning analytics and its use in higher education.

The workshop starts with a presentation which describes what learning analytics is about and gives some examples from Tampere University of Applied Sciences and elsewhere.

Then the participants are asked to discuss about the practices of learning analytics in groups and share their opinions and ideas about using learning analytics in their own departments/degree programs.

Also, the ethics and general data protection regulation is discussed.

No prior knowledge of learning analytics is needed.

The topic is generic and suitable for professors, lecturers and administration of all fields of study.

However, should there be advanced users of learning analytics, they are welcome to share their best practices to all participants during the workshop. Preferably the number of participants should not exceed 30 persons. 

Agenda: 

Morning Session 10.00 - 12.00

  1. Presentation followed by general discussion: Introduction to learning analytics 
  2. Break
  3. Discussion in groups 
    • What do you think about learning analytics?
    • What actions or plans does your department have in learning analytics?
    • Do you see potential in using learning analytics in your department? What kind of data would be needed?
  4. Discussion in groups 
    • What aspects should you, your department, your institution take into consideration when collecting data from ethical point of view and from GDPR point of view?
    • How can you collect data from your courses? What is needed for relevant data?
  5. Break 
  6. Wrap-up

Peek to your own data

  • The participants can have a look at their own Moodle course data (provided that the Moodle installation allows data download). This requires the participants to have their laptops with them, some basic Excel skills and a (finished) Moodle course.
