Giovanni Ramponi was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1956. Since 2000 he has been Full Professor of Electronics at the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Trieste.

His research interests include nonlinear digital signal processing, enhancement and feature extraction in images and image sequences, image visualization, and image quality evaluation. He is the co-inventor of various pending international patents and has published some 180 papers in international journals, conference proceedings and as book chapters.

Prof. Ramponi was from 1997 to 2002 an Associate Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters; from 2002 to 2006 was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and since 1997 has been an Associate Editor of the SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging. He was the General Co-Chair of ISPA 2013, and he was Chairman of the Technical Programme of ISISPA-2011, NSIP-03, and EUSIPCO-96. He has been the local responsible for, or has participated in, various scientific activities with contracts at the EU level (CHIRON Artemis Joint Undertaking, SCHEMA Network of Excellence, COST 276 and 254 projects, LTR and ESPRIT contracts, a TMR project), at the national level (CNR-Microelettronica, MIUR PRIN, MIUR FIRB) and at a local level (SiRAD, Eladin, and Eladin2 projects).
