Botanical garden
Founded in 1963, it has an extension of about 2 hectares plus two more of woodland on Mount
Valerio. The garden, which is currently being reorganised, consists of a didactic-scientific area with
plant collections and two thematic greenhouses.
The Mount Valerio area is mostly occupied by a wood of broadleaf trees (Seslerio-Quercetum
petreae) and at the summit by a thermophylic heath. It will be turned into a nature trail in 1998.
At present, the facility has no curator and there is shortage of personnel, and seed exchanges have
thus been temporarily suspended; the latest "Index Seminum" was published in 1990.

Herbarium
The Herbarium was initiated at the beginning of the 1960s, with the then Botanical Institute.
The cryptogamic section consists of the lichen, algae and bryophyte herbaria.
Of these, the lichen herbarium is the richest with around
30,000 specimens, the list of which is now available for consultation on the Internet.
The algae herbarium consists of about 5,000 specimens of dried sea algae.
The bryophyte section consists of a collection of about 1,000 specimens between hepaticae and
mosses. The great majority of them come from the regional territory (herbarium M.Codogno).
The following collections are worthy of note: arctic bryophytes (P.L.Nimis), bryophytes of the
Giulia region (D.Lausi), bryophytes of the Karst of Trieste (S.Grom) and some series from the
Plantae Graecenses collection (Graz).
The phanerogamic herbarium, comprising about 130,000 specimens, consists of material collected
in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region (especially the mountain zone and the Karst, collection
L.Poldini), the eastern Alps and the Mediterranean zone, although there are also collections from
other parts of the globe (Canada, USA, Japan, Canary Islands, etc.). Held here are also some
duplicates of the Flora exsiccata Carniolica and of the Flora exsiccata Austro-Hungarica, supplied
by the University of Ljubljana (SLO), and, in addition, several specimens used for the "Descriptio
Florae Italiae" by Pignatti (1982).

Library
The library was started in 1959 as the library of the Institute of Botany and Zoology.
In 1961, with the creation of an Institute of Botany and an Institute of Zoology, the bibliographic
resources were split between the two institutes.
In 1984 the two institutes came together to form the Department of Biology and the bibliographic
resources, albeit maintaining their separate locations, became part of the assets of the department.
The libraries currently hold about 12,300 volumes and around 250 active periodicals.
The bibliographic material is held in two different locations: Building M,in
via L. Giorgieri, 10 and Pavilion Q in via Weiss, 2 in the S.Giovanni area; this situation and the
lack of appointed library personnel greatly limit the efficiency of the facility.
Actually the consulting time is:
Monday and Thursday hours 10.00 - 13.00
Tuesday and Wednesday hours 15.00 - 17.00

Study Centre for Alpine Botany
The Study Centre for alpine botany belongs to the Carnic Mountain Community and is used by the
Department of Biology in the context of an agreement between the Community and the University
of Trieste.
The Centre is located at Passo del Pura, in the municipality of Ampezzo Carnico in the province of
Udine, at 1417 m.
It consists of two buildings, one of them equipped as a laboratory with
microscopes and the other occupied by a kitchen, study rooms and, on the upper floor, dormitories.
It can sleep a maximum of 22 persons.
The Centre is used for summer courses in Botany for the Degree Courses in Natural and Biological
Sciences and it is frequently visited by groups from foreign universities.
