BIODIVERSITY AND TAXONOMY: Biodiversity - Vegetation
Floro-vegetation cartography of eastern Lombardy (province of Brescia)
The work, begun in 1993, has led to the census of almost 60,000 floristic records distributed in 185
quadrants. Collaboration: Brescia Museum of Natural Sciences (Floristic Research Group of
Brescia). The vegetation study aims at outlining the main aspects of the vegetation of the territory in
question using the methods of phytosociological investigation.
Scientist in charge: F. Martini.
BIODIVERSITY AND TAXONOMY: Biodiversity - Vegetation
Vegetation Restoration
Planning and carrying out of an experiment in vegetation restoration along the route of a buried
pipe-line, aimed at the identification of autochthonous herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal species
to use for vegetation restoration. The project has a duration of two years and involves a phase
of floristic and vegetational analysis, with the production of a map of the vegetation of the entire
route, an experimental phase, which uses mainly naturalistic criteria (acceleration of the primary
succession) and a monitoring phase. The project is carried out in collaboration with Aquater S.p.A.
Scientists in charge: L. Poldini , M. Vidali.
BIODIVERSITY AND TAXONOMY: Biodiversity - Vegetation
Dolomites Vegetation
Floristic cartography and vegetation; a sinsystematic monograph of all the vegetation communities
of the Dolomites and an atlas of floristic cartography are currently being drafted, in collaboration
with the Department of Plant Biology of the University "La Sapienza" of Rome.
Scientist in charge: E. Wikus.
BIODIVERSITY AND TAXONOMY: Biodiversity - Vegetation
Vegetation in archaeological areas
Research into vegetation communities in archaeological areas of central and southern Italy,
phytosociological assignation, syntaxonomic classification. A compendium of the vegetation of the
archaeological areas of Rome is currently being drawn up, in collaboration with the Department of
Biology of the University of Campobasso.
Scientist in charge: E. Wikus.
BIODIVERSITY AND TAXONOMY: Biodiversity - Vegetation
Mediterranean Ecosystems
Research into vegetation communities in zones with mediterranean climate. Among the recent
results there are biogeographic, bioclimatic and phytosociological studies on types of mediterranean
vegetation in southern Sardinia (Sulcis) and in south-western Australia (Stirling Range).
Collaboration with: the Department of Plant Biology of the University "La Sapienza" of Rome,
the Experimental Institute for Forest Stabilisation and Apiculture of Villazzano di Trento, the
Department of Botany of the University of Sassari, the Department of Biology of the University of
Campobasso, the Management of the National Parks of Western Australia, the Kings Park and
Botanic Gardens of Perth and the Western Australian Herbarium. Scientist in charge: E. Wikus.
