ECOLOGY: Data analysis
Analysis of Ecological Systems
Research into methods of analysis of both terrestrial and aquatic ecological systems.
The following programs have been developed:
- software for the classification and the analysis of ecological gradients, using both
linear and non-linear methods
- software for the application of the information theory to problems concerning
biodiversity and to spatial analysis of georeferenced data
- models for the calculation of vegetal production and circulation of radionuclides in terrestrial
ecosystems.

Geographic Information Systems and Databases
The information concerning different types of territorial data has been integrated using GIS
(Geographic Information System) for the purpose of evaluating the environmental impact of various
anthropogenic activities (e.g. agriculture, with particular emphasis on pollution of the groundwater)
and for planning strategies for the rehabilitation of degraded areas in Developing Countries.
Prototypes of databases relating to the fodder resources and the vegetation of Italy, have been
created. Software has been developed for integrating remotely sensed data with GIS. Particular
attention has been given to public domain software.

ECOLOGY: Data analysis
Remote sensing, vegetation and land use
Programmes have been developed for the analysis of remotely sensed data (Landsat, Spot). Using
GIS, vegetation maps based on floristic data have been integrated with those based on physiognomic
data deriving from the analysis of remotely sensed data. In addition, a number of land cover
parameters (indices of vegetation and of urbanisation) have been compared with the traditional
landscape descriptions and classifications.
