ECOLOGY: Water Ecology
Carbon Cycle in the marine ecosystem
Studies on the distribution of carbon in its various phases (dissolved, colloidal and particled). The
research was started after the appearance of the mucilage phenomenon. The main results have been:
the identification and isolation of the exudate producing organisms, quantification of the
sedimentation processes, identification of the factors that most influence the production of
polysaccharides.

ECOLOGY: Water Ecology
Ecosystem of the Gulf of Trieste
Continual observations, at fixed intervals, of abiotic and biotic parameters, with particular emphasis
on the plankton system. Series of observations, carried out throughout the year, have led to the
definition of the planktonic ecological successions in the Gulf and of its trophic evolution over the
past twenty years.
The following projects are currently in progress:
- Monitoring of coastal waters of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region
- Energy fluxes within the ecosystem of the Gulf of Trieste
- Analysis of the temporal series
