Teachers and advisors / Figure didattiche

The Supervisor

This is your group leader and your mentor.
She/he has the full responsibility of your PhD career, signs your Thesis, and provides infrastructure and funding for your research activity.
The supervisor finances your fellowship (in full or with a contribution by the University) through her/his research grants. The supervisor also pays for your periods abroad, and your participation to meetings and schools.

The External advisor (EA)

Who is the EA?
Is an italian or foreign scientist, expert in the field of your research. External means that she/he is not part of the School, is not from the same institution where you work, and is not involved in your research projects as a collaborator.

How is the EA chosen?
The EA is suggested by your supervisor, and is officially appointed by the Collegio within the end of the first year.

What does the EA do?
Each year, the EA receives your project proposals or progress reports (eventually may also meet with you to discuss your data), and sends a written evaluation to the Collegio.

The Thesis Opponent (external examiner)

Who is the Opponent?
Is an italian or foreign scientist, expert in the field of your research. The Opponent is different from the EA.

How is the Opponent chosen?
The Opponent is formally appointed by the Collegio Docenti, but your supervisor will be principally involved in the choice. The School will make sure that the Opponent is experienced and knowledgeable about your field of research, and sufficiently unrelated to you or your supervisor to be honest and unbiased in evaluating your work.

What does the Opponent do?
The Opponent acts as an external reviewer. She/he reads and reviews your Thesis, participates as examiner to your VIVA, and writes a detailed evaluation of your thesis work.

NOTE: starting from the 29th cycle, the Final exam procedure will be different, according to a change in ministerial directives (nuovo regolamento dei dottorati).

La Commissione dell'esame finale

These are Italian University professors appointed by the Collegio Docenti. They coordinate the final exam each April, and provide the final evaluation of your Thesis. This board of examiners will give you the official title of "Dottore di Ricerca". For more info on the PhD VIVA, and the final exam, please see the specific section.

Final exam / Esame finale (PhD viva)

Once you receive from the school the approval to discuss your Thesis, you will have to:

do ALL the following steps WITHIN the end of March. The specific timing for these steps is flexible, and shall be defined together with your Supervisor and Opponent.

1) write your Thesis and send it to your Opponent.

2) eventually introduce revisions/corrections to your Thesis suggested by your Opponent.

3) defend your thesis in a public discussion (VIVA).This is a seminar where you present your work, followed by a discussion section during which your Opponent will ask in depth questions about your data. Obviously, other questions may come from the public.

Organization of the VIVA is under the full responsibility of your supervisor, who shall also arrange for travel and accommodation of your Opponent.

If possible, your supervisor will also ask the Opponent to give a seminar, which will become part of the teaching activities of the school.

NOTE: starting from the 29th cycle, the Final exam procedure will be different, according to a change in ministerial directives (nuovo regolamento dei dottorati).
