Research interests
Marina Sbisą has worked in the fields of philosophy of language and semiotics,
with particular attention to pragmatic issues. Her main research interests
include ordinary language philosophy, speech act theory and discourse analysis.
She has developed a critical reformulation of Austin's notion of the
illocutionary act and of his classification of illocutionary acts, and has
applied this revised classification to the analysis of conversations and other
texts. She has devoted critical attention to the notion of the enunciating
subject, viewing subjectivity as interactionally constructed. Her recent work
focuses on presupposition, implicature and context and discusses the role of
implicit communication in text understanding. She has also worked in the area
of women's studies, particularly with respect to motherhood and to feminine
subjectivity. She has participated (with the collaboration of Elena Collavin)
in the European research project "Participation
and the Dynamics of Social Positioning - The Case of Biotechnology. Images of
Self and Other in Decision-Making Procedures" coordinated by Alfons
Bora (University of Bielefeld).

Research projects:
Marina Sbisą is studying
implicit communication: kinds of implicit communication, strategies for making
it explicit, relationship between implicit communication and explicit
assertion. She is specially interested in the role played by pragmatic factors,
particularly context-boundedness, with respect to meaning comprehension and
acquisition of knowledge.
She participates in the
national research project directed by Carlo Penco (University of Genova) on
"Representation and reasoning. A study of mental processes from the point
of view of analytical philosophy and cognitive sciences", coordinating the
local unit of Trieste (special topic: "Assertion, inference, justification
in the constitution of knowledge").
