• Discussion of last week's assignment: how the three handbooks differ in presenting the Scandinavian influence on English.

• Old English and Scandinavian: the passage from the Gospels presented on week 1 is compared to an Icelandic version (1540) and a Swedish one (1541).
  

• Lexical borrowings from Scandinavian and what they tell us about the relationship between the two groups. Here you can find Otto Jespersen's presentation of the Scandinavian influence on English. • Influence of Scandinavian on grammar: the creolization hypothesis. Limits of the creolization hypothesis. You can find a brief (non-exhaustive) summary of the debate here.
  

• The variety of Scandinavian spoken in the Danelaw: how one can reconstruct it.
  

ASSIGNMENT:

Compare Emonds and Faarlund's Introduction and Chapter 1 with the three handbooks you have already browsed. The task is made easier by the fact that sometimes Emonds and Faarlund quote precisely those handbooks. Chapter 2 deals with the lexicon (and is relatively short), you are encouraged to have a look at it as well.
