WEEK 2

• Discussion of last week's assignment: how the three handbooks differ in structuring the presentation of the background notions.
  

• Lexical replacement in the passage from the Gospels introduced last week: presentation of a few examples. (If you are intrigued by etymology, you may find it interesting to browse or download Skeat's Etymological Dictionary, available at https://archive.org/details/etymologicaldict00skea)
  

• Considerations on the historical relations between the English and the so-called Danes (the Scandinavian plunderers/invaders/settlers). 

ASSIGNMENT:

Going back to the three handbooks used for last week's assignment, compare how they present the influence of Scandinavian on English. You may also want to make a comparison with what they say about the influence of Norman French (this is not obligatory).
