DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENTS

Now in its third year the Trieste Joyce School has become a very special event on the Joycean calendar.
Partly because it is held in the city which was home to Joyce for over 10 years and which he referred to as “my second country” the school attracts a wide range of seasoned Joyceans and newcomers from up to 15 different Eastern and Western European countries and from the United States and has been privileged to host a range of outstanding speakers in past editions including  Kevin Barry, Rosa Maria Bosinelli, Zack Bowen, Bruce Bradley S.J., Tenence Killeen, Corinna del Greco Lobner, Tim Martin, Giorgio Melchiori, Ken Monaghan, Laura Pelaschiar, Paola Pugliatti, Fritz Senn, Franz Stanzel, Weldon Thornton and the Irish writers Colm Tibin and Paula Meehan.
The school will be officially opened by the Irish Ambassador to Italy, His Excellency Mr Joseph Small on the evening of Sunday 4 July and conclude with a farewell dinner on Saturday 10 July.
Each morning there will be two lectures followed by three week-long seminars on Ulysses (Fritz Senn),  Finnegans Wake (Ron Ewart), and Joyce’s Triestine Writings (Kathleen Rabl and John Mc Court), in the afternoons. Walking tours of Joyce’s Trieste and visits to places of Joycean interest, such as the Greek Orthodox Church, the Jewish Synagogue, the Teatro Verdi, the music musuem, and the Caff San Marco  will also be arranged.
Among the planned highlights of the evening social programme are a visit to an Osmiza in the Triestine Carso, a night at the operetta  at theTeatro Verdi, a visit to the Castello Miramare, once summer home of the Hapsburgs, an evening of music and song, an afternoon on the beach, a special reading by the acclaimed Irish novelist, Bernard MacLaverty and the projection of one of his films,  and  a farewell dinner.
An exhibition entitled "Le Donne di Giacomo" which will illustrate the Triestine backgrounds to Giacomo Joyce and recreate the very special type of donna Triestina, which so inspired Joyce, will be open for the duration of the school.
